Artists who deserve more airplay?
13 years in the game call him a soul survivor…
Eric Roberson has returned with his new album “Left“… and what an excellent set it is too. ”Pen Just Cries” (Produced by Kev Brown), “Pretty Girl” (Produced by James Poyser & J Dilla), “Too Soon” (Produced by h2O Productions), “If I Had A Chance“, the Steely Dan sampling “Been In Love“…. and more. Honest R&B that not many can match. Essential purchase everyone.
Eric has been in this here game for 13 years now… aside from his own albums and collaborations with the likes of h2O, J Rawls, DJ Spinna (& even covering Radiohead alongside Osunlade) he has one hell of a catalogue of compositions written for other artists. I thought I would do one of my playlists to highlight some of them to show just how good the man is -
Gina Thompson ft Eric Roberson – Take My Number Down
From Gina’s unreleased 2nd album “If You Only Knew”. This mid-tempo cut features Eric prominently on the chorus. He also wrote the lead single “Ya Di Ya” & “Ladies Anthem” off the ill fated album.
Case – Wishful Thinking
Produced alongside David Guppy aka Redhead Kingpin. This is a great Stevie Wonder-esque joint off the album “Open Letter” from 2000. Eric has two other compositions on the album.
Musiq Soulchild – Mary Go Round
Quite simply one of the best R&B songs of the last 10 years. Osunlade and Eric make a superb team. Looking forward to the album they are due to record (according to the LEFT liner notes!). Make sure you pick up the UK version for the bonus track “Aimewitue” which is arranged by Eric.
Will Downing – Thinkin’ About You
From the 2000 album “All The Man You Need”. Pure Quality!
Jill Scott ft Eric Roberson – One Time
An absolute killer… Jill and Erro tear it up over the superb Vidal Davis production.
Musiq Soulchild – Previouscats
Is this better than “Mary Go Round”? It probably is you know… I really like musiq, but I wish Eric had kept this for himself.
Vivian Green – What Is Love?
One of 3 great tracks Eric wrote on Vivian’s debut, “A Love Story”. Another beauty cooked up with Osunlade. Sampling the Crusaders masterpiece “It Happens Everyday”.
Dwele – Hold On
One of the original tracks on the Vault 1.0 that was later sold to Dwele and removed from 1.5. This is great but not a patch on Eric’s version. Dwayne Bastiany on the production.
Carl Thomas – Rebound
… and the same can be said about this. I much prefer Eric’s original on Vault 1.0. But Carl has a great voice and he really does it justice.
Charlie Wilson – Thru It All
“Skip A Beat!” …. I love this. Produced alongside Dre & Vidal from the album “Charlie, Last Name Wilson”.
Kenny Lattimore & Chante Moore - Beautiful Distraction
One of the best songs of 2006. Stunning. Penned alongside Peter Hadar and h2O Productions.
I think the above shows how talented the man is… a beast! Also check out his work for Phajja, 112, Neutral, Tra-Knox, Out Of Eden, Latoya London et al.
I have the ultimate respect for the man…. a true soul survivor indeed.

I am waiting on the day that he will be recognized for his work on his album the way he should be. Hey we all know how the story goes huh. I just see big things for Van in the near future. He is currently working on his new album. I am excited about the thought of hearing more music from him as well as the experience of seeing him live. I just wanted to give Van a shout out and to let him know that he is appreciated trophy or no trophy.
Van Hunt wins a Grammy, but…
…for the wrong record.
Congrats to Van Hunt for his Grammy win last night for:
Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals

Now, Van should’ve been nominated (and should’ve won) for On The Jungle Floor, but I’ll take this, since it may draw more attention to OTJF and his forthcoming record. Van is the MAN. I’m also sore that his award and speech was part of the pre-show rather than the live telecast. Boo. Save for the opening performance by The Police, I had no compelling reason to watch The Grammys, which has been the case for years. When they start nominating and awarding independent artists, I’ll start watching.
The Pride of a HoneyComb
Sitting and reliving the moment as though it is unfolding before me but in reality, knowing that it took place more than two weeks prior permits my mind to manipulate a radiant, unabashed grin across my face. My one true regret is that I was unable to drag my sistafriend, Pam along with me.
Music possesses the power, in me, to make spur of the moment decisions that I might otherwise contemplate so much that I miss out on an opportunity.
Upon hearing that Frank McComb was going to breeze into Chicago and that a few friends that I don’t see very often would be in attendance, I too needed to be there. Haggling for a few days with accommodations and stuff, I finally just paid for my roundtrip flight and put the rest in God’s hands. (Thank you, DMo) I couldn’t pass on an opportunity to witness Frank’s musical magic come alive before me – a treasure in itself. And to experience his warm and vibrant personality is an added bonus!
Being permitted to sit in on the rehearsal the evening before the big show made me feel giddy like I did as a child at Christmas. Unbeknownst to me, I was in the midst of some of music’s brightest masterful minds (Frank, of course…along with Khari Parker on drums and Richard Patterson on bass). I sat back, watched them blend their sounds and create things that I knew would dazzle the crowd because it sure did the trick for me! They were on fire!
Hanging out with Frank the day of the show, I’d learned that the musicians who I met the night before and would see again at The Kinetic Playground had played with virtually everyone. Richard is the MD for Boz Scaggs and Khari also plays as part of that band. However, after ‘googling’ both Richard and Khari who’d downplayed just how long they’d been in music, I quickly discovered news that made my mouth fall WIDE open! Richard is currently touring with David Sanborn and has played alongside Miles and many other of my favorites. Khari has had “the” gig that I’m sure has made him the envy of many … drumming for Destiny’s Child. Also sitting in that evening was Larry Billups on percussion. Frank introduced Larry as having just completed some dates with Peven Everett. Imagine that…Frank McComb & The All Stars!
For me, the thrill of watching Frank McComb perform live is tri-fold: the music/vocal power, waiting for him to find his groove and doing this little leap off of the stool as he plays and the eye action between he and the other musicians. I stood at the foot of the stage, mesmerized by the majestic creativity that I’d witnessed. Frank wasted little time bonding with the crowd through the gift of music. Forced to do something I normally don’t – I promised myself that I’d keep track of the set. It was difficult to do since I was absolutely distracted, but I managed to list every song except the finale, a Stevie Wonder classic that was done up in a marvelous fashion. Many of my favorite McComb songs were performed that evening and still I remain on a higher plateau of pride as a HoneyComb.
Frank McComb was out of control at the Kinetic Playground, as were his accompanying musicians. Richard’s fingers should have been sore, Larry’s hands should have been blistered, Khari’s wrists should have been swollen. An added bonus were Frank’s all new background vocalists who also wowed the crowd. Together, they all were a perfect unit and complimented one another marvelously!
That night the concert included the following songs: Superwoman, Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters, Still Has A Hold On Me, Shine, Love Natural, Future Love (aka Lanie & Boodah’s Love Story), Cupid’s Arrow, Left Alone, Keep Pushin’ On, Do You Remember Love & the Stevie Wonder gem that I didn’t write down but hear the bass line in my head over and over.
Although this was not the first time I’d had the pleasure of seeing Frank McComb in concert, I felt as though it was. The experience was new and the impression left behind was lasting.
May Frank McComb and whatever all-star ensemble he gathers when he travels to a city near you, bless you in the same manner as they have blessed my heart!

What a time we had!
The PlanetSoul.com Launch Concert & Party was a great success! The place was packed, and the audience was treated to a little spoken word poetry, a few songs from Casuell and Mishal Moore, and a huge helping of Eric Roberson. Miami’s own Deep Fried Funk Band did an outstanding job backing up the artists, and the event’s host, Def Poet Will the Real One, was both laid-back and entertaining.
Special thanks to Chai Footman and Mocha Soul Promotions for putting on this event. We’ll be posting pictures on the PlanetEvents page later this week.
